Make sure they are a major store. Smaller websites that are less popular are less trustworthy.

Ask around. Look online for reviews of the website.

THE BEST METHODS

1) Use a credit card that has a low credit line. If it's compromised, they can't get much.

2) Some sites let you use Paypal, sometimes for an extra fee. This is a good option too.

3) Setup a secondary account at your bank and get a VISA checkcard for it. That way, you can maintain a low balance at all times reducing the risk.

It is pretty safe to use any of your cards to pay online bills once logged in securely. But for purchases, I'd stick to one of the above methods I suggested.

Many credit card companies have "virtual credit card"... they are drawn from the same account... but that number is good ONLY for the transaction you are currently using.

In the absence of that... create a separate credit card... and force a LOW LIMIT... (to whatever you're comfortable with)... such that, in the unlikely event you do get HACKED... your liability is minimal...

Use only sites with good reputations, and secure servers...

Finally, use a third party organization for a few percent... like PAYPAL.

I have NEVER had a problem (knock knock knock) and I've made literally thousands of purchases over the last 6 years.

Most credit cards are protected against online fraud. Make sure with your institution though.

Keep track of all transactions and report immediately if you notice suspicious activity. If fraud does occur, you will get your money back within 3-4 weeks.

Good away to avoid fraud is to use it only on well established sites. Whatever you do, DO NOT EVER GIVE YOUR SSN TO ANYBODY ONLINE. ID theft is a whole different ball game.

If you are purchasing from a website which uses people to buy and sell things make sure to check the seller's rating and people's opinion about them. Also try to buy from the trustworthy and major store sites. Don't go on any site which is virtually unknown. And never ever supply your credit card info in the e-mail.

Most sites on line usually have to be approved by the credit card branch before approving the order, hope this answers your answer.

Here's a very simple thing for you to follow :-

DON'T EVER USE YOUR CREDIT CARD ON THE NET!!!

Except for someone you know very well and trust, that is.

A lot of hackers are just waiting for the next fool who swipes his Card on the Net! Then, you're dead meat.

Use Pay Pal or cheques.

Cheers

In one line for you mate:

Use your credit card only with the site who would give 128 bit encryption. (Double click on the lock icon which is on the right side bottom corner of the IE window to see it)
