The egg.

Why do I say so? Because long before chickens evolved, other animals laid eggs.

As to whether the chicken or the *chicken egg* came first, I say the *chicken egg* since there are many different breeds of chicken but the eggs are similar.

The chicken because the egg wouldn't survive without being looked after by the chicken, and it takes a chicken and a cockrel to fertilise an egg

The egg was first.

After all egg-laying-birds were already there and once a bird lay an egg with mutated genes which we later described as containing the characteristics of a chicken.

This is scientifically accepted now.

not the chicken; not the egg. first was the road the chicken crossed over to get to the other side so she could lay the egg that gave birth, though she did not realize it at the time, to the evolution of the skinless and then the boneless chicken. thank the chicken-(goddess-whatever) that she did not live to see it. alas, she was shipped to pittsburg, texas, the pilgrim's pride 'factory', before she even knew what happened.
