There are 3 major steps for securing a machine:
-Antivirus
-Firewall
-Anti-spyware
AVG has already been mentioned several times and is easily the best free antivirus software around.
ZoneAlarm provide an extremely good free firewall.
Finally, most people choose to run at least 2 anti-spyware applications and in terms of free choices I would recommend Windows Defender and Adaware.
Links to all these programs can be found below.

You can download ccleaner for free here: http://bit.ly/1Bk5V5C
First open CCleaner
Go to the Cleaner tab and you will be confronted by a very confusing lineup of checkboxes.
To make this brief, below is my recommended setup:
Under internet explorer check temporary internet files, cookies, and last download location. Most users don't really need this stuff. keep history and bookmarks unchecked, history is a maybe, but you don't want to lose bookmarked sites. You can normally leave Windows Explorer, System, and Advanced alone.
Run CCleaner and it will start deleting files.
afterward it will present you with a list of the files deleted, you really don't need to go through it as it will be several pages long.
The registry cleaner is recommended for slightly more advanced users. Use it after uninstalling programs as they will often leave behind incorrect registry entries.
If you decide to run Registry cleaner then review the items detected and always back up the registry (I keep a folder aside for this)
The Tools tab lets you uninstall programs and set startup programs. Why do you need this if Windows has all of these features? Especially with Vista Home Ed. The windows defender software explorer( startup programs) doesn't pick up some entries (however software explorer is easier to use).
Using CCleaner to uninstall programs and then check for leftover registry entries takes less time.
Under Options you can determine how CCleaner cleans your files. I leave this alone.

for a good security package download and build this security disc that i make and distribute to friends and family
1)make sure you have a new cd-r
2)download the following software
a. http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html(avast 4 anti virus)
b. http://www.safer-networking.org/(spybot search and destroy)
c. http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/(adaware personal edition)
d. http://www.ewido.net/en/(ewido anti-spyware ,free edition)
e. http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp?lid=zaskulist_download(zone alarm intrusion detection(firewall))
3)using a burning software like nero burn these programs to your cd-r and label it"free security software"
4)as all of this is free pass copies to your mates and together this will eradicate a few more viruses and spyware from the internet
i have had good feedback from people who have used this and i have been told "i didnt know my p.c was that infected" and "my computers is really fast now"and "you have saved my life"
the thing is you dont have to spend £50 on a program like "norton"just so you can say"ive got norton anti-virus on my computer"when you can freely download this software that in some cases will do a better job than norton
the main things you need to remember is
1.keep your programs up-to-date(a out of date virus and spyware scanner is as much use as having no scanner at all)
2.use safe surfing habits i.e dont visit sites that look badly made as they are normally a front for some on-line scan
3.if you havent already ,install service pack 2 from microsoft.com,this will help with windows updates and has a built in pop-up-blocker
all these programs use very little resources so dont woory about loosing vital memory, and i use all these programs and have for the last 2 years and in that time i have had 1 virus,2 spyware enough said!
good luck

For antivirus: Antivir XP, I find it works a lot better than AVG or the purchased software, which is the least effective.
For spyware: Download Adaware and Spybot, as they can pick up stuff the other misses on occasion.

One thing that I'd advise you download and install Spybot Search and Destroy. You'll get it at the link provided below. It's a free software.
Once you've downloaded and installed it, please update it first; then click on "Immunize" and then "Search and destroy".
Works like a charm with me.
Don't forget to keep updating it every other day, though and clicking on immunize again after each update.
All the best.
Cheers.
PS,
Almost forgot, once you've immunized, you can't get any of the restricted and bad sites. That's, in a way, the down side.

your hardware is a great investment. protect it, secure it and take care of it.
protect it - i bought AVG PRO(pay version). 2 years subcription. quite worth it. if u r using POPmail, it scan ur mail as well.
secure it - as for this, i'm using a few free version software.
# zonealarm(free version) # windows defender (free version)# spyware blaster(free version)
take care of it - again this i'm also using few software. free and pay version.
#Ccleaner(free version) # TweakNow RegistryCleaner STD(free version) # AD-Aware SE Personal(free version) # Xoftspy(pay version) #disk clean up and defrag
protect it and secure it - please update regularly
take care of it - dont be lazy. clean it or scan it at least once a month.
no antivirus is the best. u need more than that to secure ur system. virus,spyware,ad-ware,pop out and the list goes on...norton is for sure out of my list - expensive, massive file size, long time in scanning.
dont waste money in getting any security suite. so call all in one. different company, specialise in different field. excample, zonealarm free version, is good enough as for firewall home user purposes.
*pointed to be noted. what i suggested above, i have been using past 3-4 year in my IBM X 24.and mainly for home user.

hi, i recommand you to use firefox.
firefox is much smaller than IE, so i run faster than IE.
firefox can edit which site/popup to block and unblock.
besides, firefox can block any any poppus and disable any virus on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE. as you know, most of the virus is spread throught internet and webpage.
download firefox for free:

Best Wishes && Good Luck!
