Tom Petty, Robbie Williams... Among many others, they could never achieve succes in the other continent. Why is that?

I think most artists concerntrate on promoting their selves in their home continent. It takes a lot of effort to be popular in the US if you're popular in Europe because they have a certain mould they like everyone to fit into, although I believe it's easier for US performers to gain a steady fan base in Europe.

We've got a big bluish Atlantic Ocean that separates the US from Europe, and that's caused us to develop different tastes. The Internet and TV have made it easier to have access to foreign songs, but there are enough artists in our own countries to keep us happy with our own music.
Europeans have a different taste of music when compared with Americans-- sure, some of the genres might be labeled the same, but there is a difference between American and European rock. I suppose it's just because we've each developed our own style of a genre, and Americans don't really like European music as much because it isn't quite the same as American music, and vice versa.

Quite simply there are varying cultures with differing ideals as to what is good in the arts.
