As for net games with other people, you can use yahoo chess, the ICC - Internet Chess Club (http://www.chessclub.com/) or FICS - Free Internet Chess Server (http://www.freechess.org/). As for the additional software to analyze different games or to perform engine matches, I'd suggest WinBoard (http://www.tim-mann.org/xboard.html) or Chess Arena (http://www.playwitharena.com/).
