This close pass between Earth & Mars actually happened about 4 years ago. Unfortunately, the emails live on in cyberspace.

At the time, there was some press release that said something like "if you look at Mars through a small telescope, it will appear as large as the full moon." The "small telescope" part has disappeared from the junk emails.

No, Mars is currently the other side of the sun at the moment, and hence is a very long way away. Even at it's closest approach, last year, it only appeared as a very bright red point in the night sky. It will never approach the earth close enough to be as big as the moon

Mars is just too small and too far to be seen from earth by a naked eye. Let alone appearing as large as the moon. Although Venus is visible on the sky on some evenings, as it is slightly bigger and more shinney (thanks to the gasses in its atmosphere which reflect the light from the sun) than the other planets.

No, Mars never ever gets close enough to Earth to appear that big. The E-mail that has been going around saying that it will is bogus.

Dear God!!!! I Hope Not!!! (LOL)

If it is it means either the Earth or Mars has been knocked out of orbit and the Earth will either move to an orbit farther out and we all freeze to death! OR move to an orbit closer to the sun and soon burn to a crisp!
Or we fly out of orbit completely and freeze to death!
