No differently than someone who is considered "normal". Just have to get beyond all the illnesses!

It is difficult to deal with anyone who has this problem. As a former mental health nurse I can tell you that the depression is probably going to be the easiest thing to get better. Schizoid and Social Phobia disorders are extremely hard on the patient and the family. I am going to step out on a limb here and assume that this person is actually a Paranoid Schizophrenic. If so then they will need extensive psychological help. Usually hospitalization, a GOOD psychiatrist, finding the proper medication and good family support will help the person with the illness to return to some level of at least a mild degree of functionality. With any Schizoid personality you must remember that they have the very real potential for danger to not only themselves, but to others as well.
It really takes a good deal of work and love and understanding on the part of the person or persons who are dealing with this individual. There is always hope that their symptoms can be managed but you must remember that they will never be cured. Finding and staying on the right medication or combination of medications is imperative to the person having an increased quality of life. I have found that the ones with these types of disorders tend to be in and out of the hospital usually because they go off and on their meds. The biggest complaint I have heard from the patients is "I don't like the way the meds make me feel".
Good luck, it's truly a difficult situation for all involved.

this is a journey. is this person getting help? if so, are they following the program? If the answers are yes, always encourage them and praise them for their accomplishments and improvements.

This is particularly important because you will witness them before they feel them.

If they refuse help, well there is not much you can do.Be there for them when you can. always be "real" with them about their challenge.

some people respond well to medication that stabilizes them quite a bit .... and after stabilizing some they can learn to develop better coping skills. Best thing is to not worry that this is the end of the world,,, it will get better, and better.
