The memory is not inserted correctly. I hope to God "tapping it in the slot" did not include the use of a hammer.

Pull it out and try again. Make sure you have it in correctly. RAM is not symmetric, you have to face it in the right direction.

What you are describing is a classic symptom of not seating it properly.

Physically smell the memory module, if there is a burning smell then it's time to buy new one. If there is no such smell, bring the memory module back to the shop where you have purchased from, request testing from them. Your motherboard might also be damaged during the insertion of the memory module and so you might also want to bring it back to shop. Depending on the brand of memory and motherboard, you can also bring them back to the distrubutors. Additional info can be found at sg.hardwarezone.com

If you have not already done it, take the memory out.

If you have taken the memory out and it is will not booting, try taking out and putting back in the original memory. You might have knocked it loose.

If after that it will not boot you may have damaged the system board and will need have it repaired or replaced

before you go splashing out on memory..

you might want to invest in a book on how to speak/spell english, and grammar. this would help you much more in life than installing memory in your computer.
