Light not only travels faster than sound but also longer. Thus it is possible that there is lightning without thunder. And I suppose that is what you saw. Where as the ring of clouds you saw was probably due to clouds expanding outwards due to the heat of the lightning.

Well yesterday (wednesday) morning there was a thunder storm off the west coast of scotland, the lightening was way above the clouds and there was no thunder at all, (too far away to be heard) but the lightening was like I'd never seen before. If I didn't know any better I'd have said it was the ufo from independence day entering thru our atmosphere,, But I do know better and it wasn't so there you have it,, lightening it is.

I saw a similar storm last night in south east England. The sky was flashing varies hues all around. I could not see any bolts as the cloud cover was total. Also it was eerie because I could not hear any of them. You may call me unimaginative but I just put it down to several separate storms quite a way off. Nice to sit out and watch.

Your ma was right... a full on electrical storm! If the lightening was far enough away you may not hear the thunder! I've driven through storms like it! They look awsome!

sounds to me like you got to see the best of a heat lightening show. they happen all the time. just people don't get to see them because there is no thunder, to wake them up. heat lightening is a really beautiful event but that is all, its not aliens or anything else. you need to watch less fright time tv.

Its possible to miss the sound of thunder - distance/wind direction etc could prevent the sound waves reaching your ears. But maybe you did see a ufo! Who's gonna prove you didn't!!

There was a meteor shower last night. You may have seen that coupled with a bit of the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis).

I saw a meteorite come down last night about 10 km from my house. That's as close as I can get.
