Line terminator I think is what your looking for.

In my opinion it is a throwback and a serious pain. Hate using any language that forces it on you. Out of a thousand lines of code you are likely to extend what 20? So the other 980 times your encountering a possible error that wastes your time both in typice and doing your first compile just to find those lines where you forgot a : or that you had it in the wrong place. Of course the err msg itself is obscure and useless. Only experience teaches you to start looking up from the line the err occured and look for missing :s

The origional purpose was back in the day when everything had to be spelled out as compilors had to be written with very tiny amounts of ram availible for the compilor itself. The whole purpose was to put work on the programmer to save Ram. Most non-C languages use a carriage return or cariege return and life feed for end of line terminator. MUCH easier to read, debug and write.

yes, it is just called a semi-colon.

sometimes it is pronounced as 'end' though, since that is its function: to indicate the end of a line of code.
