A lot of intelligent women play "dumb" as a defence mechanism as many women and men find intelligence threatening. It's quite possible that whoever you're talking about is intelligent, but doesn't like to show this in public. The best thing to do is get her on her own and talk about any subject. If she just nods and shakes her head and says "Really?" or "That's nice" or "Delightful" you've probably got yourself a duff one!

I sometimes play dumb to wind my boyfriend up and get him to do things I dont like doing.... "Oh darling, I always make a mess when I try and cook, could you show me again how to chop these onions... you're so much better than me at doing that." or "oh no I'm scared of the lawnmower, I always run over the wire when I'm using it, doe that matter?"
Works like a charm
