You've developed a phobia - very understandably, in my opinion.
See a doctor about being referred to a behavioural psychologist. You can beat this.
Poor you - just reading your message made my skin crawl.

I had a similar experience - when a jar of maggots, unknowingly hatched into flies, was opened in my face.
The best way to get over it is to isolate the experience as a freak one off. Definitely don't eat in the same place again. I would think that the experience is a very rare one.
Worse case scenario - remember people eat maggots in some countries.

What an awful experience - no wonder you're so upset by it.
Have you considered hypnotherapy?
Alternatively what about hitting your fear head on and actually working towards knowing more about maggots and finding out that they're not all bad (easy for me to say I know) - it would help if you could find a professional who specifically deals with phobias - a bit like those who help people to fly if they're scared of it.
Don't know if this would be of any use to you.

Good luck and I hope you can overcome this soon!

i don't like maggots either and will vomit at the thought of them, to tell you what i had to do is simple but disgusting...make rice at home, eat a bowl of it with milk and sugar, keep repeating that "this is rice, this is rice, this is rice". and remember, in general you don't get food with maggots unless you are eating in a dirty place, try to be aware of how clean the tables are and how long dishes are left on them, how dirty is the bus boys stand. if it looks bad walk out and try some where else. maggots are just fly larvae and clean restaurants don't have flys very often, if at all.

we took some sausage rolls on holiday once and put them on a shelf ...i forgot to cover them ...got the plate off the shelf later that day and offered my husband and kids a sausage roll ...then we all screamed ...it was wriggling with maggots ...we kind of went off sausage rolls for a bit it was a horrid thing to have placed infront of you and when you are scared of something like that it is far worse ...i have a bad fear but now can look at one in a book with out throwing the book across the room and jumping on the back of a chair staring at the floor incase it came to life ...when you are so bad you do really have to try and train yourself not to be so bad ...force yourself to look at pictures of them in books first once you have done that then try and find something on tv about them so you can see them but not see them live infront of you...if you can do those two things then after a time you might not be so bad about them...thats what i did anyway and now though i can't touch the picture of them in a book i can now hold the book without throwing it across the room and don't sweat ...if you learn about the thing you are affraid of it helps you accept it and the knowledge your brain gains of them will let you know they cannot hurt you ..but you have to force yourself to do that.

Maggots are in fact very clean and are used in the medical world frequently to heal ulcers and the like. They can't kill you nor can they eat you, they only feed on dead flesh.
