Have already considered a small wind turbine, which seems to be becoming more popular, - this could help save electricity, but what about the gas central heating?

There of corse is the wind turbine. For heating and cooling there is geothermal heating/cooling, or a heat pump could help. For a hot water heater, there is a solar water heater. Then of course there are solar panels. There are now also furnaces that will run on corn grain. Those can be found in the Prairie Farmer magazine. There are also solar stoves. The next best thing you can do after that is just thoroughly insulate your house very well.

Flourescent lights will also help save energy.

Geothermal is growing in popularity.

I'm trying to convince my wife that we should build an underground concrete dome house.
Underground, the temp year round would be about 53 degrees. If we want it to be 68 in winter, we only have to heat the air 15 degrees. If it's 0 outside while in our present home, we have to heat the air 68 degrees.

We had in Argentina a system for heating water with the sun installed in our house. It has been working for 20 years without any maintenance, I can't beleive is not beeing used massively as it had no moving parts and it last virtually forever.

Check into solar panels, lots of new stuff out there on the market lately with prices soaring on everything.

Again gas is a costlier source of energy. Solar heaters for water and cooking can be used.
