RE:
Do birds eat tomatoes?
This is the first time I have grown tomatoes outside and look like
having a bumper crop. When I grew strawberries in tubs I put nets
on but they still pecked a few.If they do peck tomatoes what is the best form of protection bearing in mind the tomatoes are in tubs of compost.

Someone asked this same question on a Tv show this week. The expert answered that the birds are usually looking for water and suggested puting out a bird bath to keep the birds from eating the tomatoes

Actually, birds do peck at tomatoes, and that is from years of experience. Do they actually "eat" them like we do because they like them, no clue, but they will peck a hole in them. They are attracted by the color. Your tomatoes are safe while they are gree, but once they start turning red, look out! Netting is the best way to protect them, talk to the people at your local home and garden store.
I'm envious of your bumper crop, it got too hot too fast here, and I only had one tomato. Was it yummy? Don't know, because a bird got to it before I could! LOL
Good luck and enjoy your tomatoes!

Larger birds such as crows will peck at them, however, your worst enemy will the the common squirrel. They love to get a few bites out of them and then leave the rest to rot. I use a plastic bird netting around the plants but anchor it well at the bottom to keep squirrels from entering the area. Leave areas that you can untie to pick the tomatoes and retie. There are two types of netting available. One is a smaller holed black plastic which works very well for all animals. The second is a white larger holed cloth type fencing. It is easier to pick the tomatoes with that one however, squirrels can get through it easier as well. Good luck!

just a little guess off the top of my head but i think the birds might be feeding on bugs on the tomatos not the tomatos themselves unless they have the opportunity to get to the seeds of the tomatos which they will feed on

Wild birds will eat anything! We use a moving scarecrow,,,,,,they had went along and pecked on each one. You can tie a cord up and strip old rags to tie on the cord so the wind will make them move around. And old cd's hanging in the sun work also.
