by birth means you were born there. You could immigrate to Britain and be a British Citizen, so they mean just the Citizens born there.

British subject means a citizen of Britain or one of the Countries that use to be colonies of Britain - also known as the British Commonwealth.

I am not sure why you specify 1943. But India got it's own constitution in 1950 and lost British Citizenship and became Indian Citizens.

British subjects, other than by those who obtained their status by virtue of a connection to the Republic of Ireland prior to 1949, automatically lose their British subject status on acquiring any other nationality, including British citizenship, under section 35 of the British Nationality Act 1981.
