I am wondering why NASA and the rest of the space faring countries don't train dwarves and midgets for space missions? Surely this would save fuel and supplies give more space for the astronauts.

A midget/dwarf would have less body weight (perhaps 1/2 that of an adult) but with the mind and intellectual capability of an adult explorer. Surely this would save huge amounts of payload capacity- both fuel and in food.

When I said "adult" I meant "normal adult sized".

I was thinking about the Mars mission as well which would need a different type of spacecraft to the shuttle. Long periods in space where every pound/kilo would count.

for one thing midgets have many deformaties of the joints that make mobility really hard for them. im not sure any dwarf has ever applied, but since most of the astronauts came from the military areas in the beginning they had to pass the military physical requirements, and thats five ft 6 i think for men, the shortest you can be. i dont think it would save much space anyway.

I would definately have to disagree with you for one simple reason. What if these space midgets made contact with aliens. I would hate for them to think of us as a planet of dwarves and midgets!! They would make earth look like the Keebler elf tree!! Also it seems midgets have more than just a physical abnormality. They seem a little koo-koo as well. And also their fingers arent very mobile. Sometimes space travel requires delicate procedures which I dont think they are capable of due to the deformality of their digits.

The shuttle usually takes hundreds of tons of cargo with it, and weighs hundreds of tons itself. A few hundred pounds of weight would be negligible savings.
Further, the suits and controls are all designed for "normal sized" people, so there would be much more down side(retro-fitting the shuttle) than upside (saving a few hundred pounds).
