The best thing to do is get lots of rags that you don;t need or don't really care for. White is preferable, and stick them on a boil wash 100 degrees if you can.
Its best to do this once a month, as it kills the fungus that grows in the seal, and hence gets rid of the smell. When we do all of our washing at between 40 and 60 degrees, it provides the perfect breeding environment for the fungus.
A washing machine engineer told me that when we had the same problem.
Good luck

aha i was a washer engineer, the filter may need emptying cos a little bit of stagnant water sits there, boy that pongs! call a washer engineer or have a go yourself (if it's a Hotpoint it's located underneath at the back held on by a double spring, pair of grips and she is off) take that plastic filter out and clean it, also try doing an empty wash with some sweet smelling anti bacterial stuff in there. i used to use some concentrated stuff can't remember the name mmm Flouret? in a small bottle for 60p? If not then buy a new machine they are so cheap these days at £175 for a new washer. That's why i'm an ex washer engineer he he. (If u do call some guy out make sure it's free call out and pay no more than £20-25 for 30 mins work and don't be fooled into believing u need new parts!)

Snap! I've been wondering this for ages! I did find some washing machine cleaner in ASDA and have used that. Now it smells of cleaner and the original damp smell too! You can't win! I think leaving it open to air might be a good suggestion but I don't want the kitchen to smell!
I agree with the person above that it is the rubber seal, water gets trapped in there and thats where the smell comes from.

My whirlpool has a settling bottle that is intended to catch anything that gets through the holes in the tub. Pins, toothpicks, etc. If there are objects in that they can catch lint and fuzz and soon you have a glob of junk there that can hold bacteria which will of course smell. The machine has to be partially disassembled to clean that. Not knowing if your machine has a bottle like mine I would suggest you always clean the lint filter after every use and set it out to thoroughly dry. I used to run a load with no clothes and bleach every so often if I noticed odor. You might try that but be certain to rinse again before washing clothes.
I started using borax in addition to the regular detergent and there has been no odor ever since. I think the borax is much wiser as it isn't toxic and it is safe for all clothes. It makes them smell really clean.

Yes. I have the same problem. Last week I tried to clean it with bleach, but I noticed that the rubbery seal has a hole in it that is pretty big. Come to think of it, I noticed that water leaks out when I put something unusual like flip flops or sneakers in there. Now I know why the towels can get a moldy smell too. When I called Maytag, they told me that the warranty service agreement doesn't cover mold damage. I'm not really sure which came first, the tear or the mold. I'll find out next week when the repairman comes.

I have found that if you throw in a half cup of white spirit vinegar and let the machine run through a normal wash cycle (without clothes in), it normally sorts it out. The smell is caused by bacteria breeding and the vinegar kills them without damaging the machine.

Is it a blomberg, if so we have the same problem, it's the rubber seal to the door that is giving off the smell. Not much you can do about that. Otherwise put the cycle on the highest temperature with nothing in that may kill any bacteria that is giving off a smell

get it repaired and contact the washing machine company's maintenance department make sure you have checked the filter and that the water is draining properly and that the machine isn't blocked at the moment. When ever I use my washing machine it leaks pools of water almost like a swimming pool

pour in a bottle a vinegar and a box of baking soda and run it threw. You should do it every so often. I do once about every other month. Make sure you wash the door and around the top of washer with this mixture. If this does not work your seal needs replaced.
