Actually .NET is 40-70% faster than all of its predecessors.

Programming languages can be branched out - categorized in several different ways.

Languages are categorized most simply as
One to One
One to Many
Many to Many

Assembler, a machine language, is a one to one language.
Java, a compiled language, is a one to many language.
ASP, an interpreted language, is a one to many language.
C#, a compiled language, is a many to many language.

..You get the point

In essence, all programming languages are the same. They all have the power to access modern tools - i.e. the internet, and .dll, .dat (etc) files. The only difference is syntax, and method of running - as well as debugging.

Personally, I think .NET combined with VB are the best languages..

It doesn't matter the processing behind VB because VB is only for windows platforms - and I have yet to see a VB program run HALF decent on a windows machine under any hardware configuration.

.NET is the epitome of web programming that leaves EVERY predecessor in the dust. And now, it utilizes activeX controls with great simplicity - making your internet experience unbelievable.

I've answered many questions similar to this, and my answer had always been the same: "There is no single language that is the best language". Each language has their own advantage and disadvantages.

For example:

Assembly - Programs runs the fastest in this language, but it's lack of simplicity makes it unfavourable among common programmers.

Basic (especially VB) - although it is usually slow to run, basic is much easier to learn than most other language.

C++ - is have a very balanced running time to easiness to powerfulness.

C# - This language, in contrast with other C-family language, compiles program that runs slow because it's use of .NET framework. As we know, .NET framework uses an intermediate language, which is similar to Java, contributes heavily to it's slow running speed. It is less powerful than Java, but it is almost as slow as Java.

Java - This language is very powerful, with one of the most libraries, but it's running speed has been known to be quite terrible.

Basically, you just have to find one language which is the best balance on easiness of use and running speed and powerfulness.

C and JAVA are the best languages till now.
C support pointers.
Java is a pure oops concept and Platform independent, that run in any of the platform.

Assembly.
It remains the same, people got dumber and dumber and smarter people created so called High-level languages to have these dumbo's also contribute.
(There are millions of programmer now, because of that, or else, there would have been quite few PhDs only)

Simple. Although it is no longer in use, latin is the best language devised. It is the base for Spanish, French, and Italian. It is how we truly name everything in science. It is the most used language in the world.
