i take it every night within a couple hours. is that close enough or should i schedule a specific time?

It should be the same time every day, no matter what. At lunch time, before you get out of bed, when it is dinner time, with breakfast. Any time as long as it is the same time everyday.

you are suppose to take your birth control pill at the same time as the day before.

That's good enough. I just make sure I take them sometime that day...but do aim for doing so when I wake up.
