Hey Peter;
If you intend on using a computer to record, you need an analog to digital box: most standard sound cards' stereo inputs just won't cut the mustard...) I use a Tascam US-422 and, for A$300 it is BRILLIANT! (It also has a Phantom Power for Studio Mic's) A good mic is a must but you don't have to spend 1000's on it: I use a Behringer B-2 Pro (A$200) and it blows me away every time!!! ( I think if I cranked it up a bit more, this thing would pick up my THOUGHTS!!!)
Same deal with software: You don't need to spend mega-bucks on it, BUT you need a bit of head-room (for when you get better at it, and you start having great mixing/FX ideas.) Sorry to the guy who mentioned Magix, I tried it only to find it VERY limited. Cubase L.E came free with the Tascam US-422 and it is VERY GOOD. However, I bought Cubase S.E for A$200 and it is unbelievable. I must admit it is a bit tricky to use at the start but when you get used to it, it becomes second nature.The Quick Start Manual is good enough, but if you're really keen, you can download the 800 Page full manual...
You can also get really good, CHEAP FX from Behringer: I got a Virtualizer-Pro and I swear by it!
Have look on E-Bay : you'll find great bargains in Musical Equipment/Pro-Audio.
E-mail me directly if you have more help.
(Please note: I don't work for Behringer, I don't sell it either! I just think they have the best Quality vs Price ratio on the current market)
JLB.

EZ...for $100 you can buy a microphone and a home-recording program...just set that up with your pc and you're good to go. I have Magix music maker...it's kind of old, but it gets the job done
