I've heard that things like Nylons and Chocolate are hard to get. What else?

Was on a 'People to People' tour to Cuba acouple of years ago. Some of the items they told us they could use is soap, cosmetics/toiletries, ballpoint pins, chewing gum, inexpensive watches & jewelry, but best is to tip them extra with their money so they can buy what they need. Take old clothes, levis, shorts, etc., or clothes you don't like and leave them there. Since they are short of medicine, take extra over the counter drugs like aspirins or toothpaste and brushes, etc.; We take them for granted, but they are hard for them to get.
Don't know what kind of trip you are going on, but they are pretty strict as to what you take in; don't wrap up presents or take unusal things that they will know is a gift. They are not materialistic like us and are more concerned about getting practical things they can use.
Its also hard to tip them much over there, as you are not allowed to bring a lot of money in (it was $200 a person, but you can hide a little more). This applies to U.S. citizens; Canadian & Europeans may be a little less strict. Its a great place to visit.

US$ are illegal in all but some business transactions, but they are by no means useless. There is a rich black market in dollars and they are a highly prized commodity.
Chocolate would melt in Cuba; Nylons are a bit personal, don't you think?

Dollars.....Cuban peso is essentially worthless for blackmarket items in Cuba.
I agree with one of the previous answers: bring toiletries (sample sized stuff is great, because you can bring a large variety)

US$ is widely accepted as tips in all resorts. Other gifts such as stationary i.e. erasers, pens, pencils, rulers, color pencils, smaill note pads etc. These are great gifts for the maids' children. Cosmestic i.e. lipsticks; facial, hand creams. Hair clips, hair bands. hard candies are always welcome. playing cards.
