Go over the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausolito...very nice there. Also go south to Monterey and Carmel, once there go on "17 Mile Drive", you'll be glad you did. Half Moon Bay is not a bad little town either. I live about 90 miles east of S.F. and go to these places a lot....it's just gorgeous ! Have a great trip !

You can go to the Redwoods, wine country, Monetery, etc. I would recommend you go online and request a California tour book they will send to you for free that will give you a lot of general info & map as to what there is to see & do in the area. What to see & do will depend on what you like, how far you want to drive in one day. You could go to Yosemite National Park and even Lake Tahoe/Reno if you get up early in the morning and then return late evening. (Only 2-4 hours drives)

Actually, if you have never been there before, you could easily spend a week in San Francisco and not see everything. If you do take side trips you could pick up sightseeing booklets there and decide at the last minute where you want to go. Weather is good in that area in Dec., a bit cold but no snow, so its easy to get around.

It depends what you are interested in. Also keep in mind that the rain in northern California is a wintertime phenomenon. We almost never get rain during the summer, but there is a good chance of encountering rain in December. So have an alternate plan, or be flexible on your day trip plans, because driving in the winter storms can be a major pain.
Having said that, one of my favorite places on the entire planet is Pt. Reyes National Seashore. Beautiful coastline, great hiking. You can find info on-line if you are interested in it.
Lots of people come from all over the world to see the Sonoma & Napa wine country. You can find lots of info on that online, too. If you are into the wine scene, I'd personally recommend Sonoma over Napa, because it is less crowded and less pretentious. Lots of great restaurants, too, but of course you'll find lots in SF, too.

I only would recommend one day trip outside SF if this is your first time.
Either go north and see the wine country (Sonoma) and the north coast including Bodega Bay and Point Reys or go south along the coast to Monterey and Carmel.
One of the best travel guides I can recommend is bay area backroads, check it out at your bookstore.
