Are the late '90s long enough ago to compare to now?

Yes, I think the ideas and styles from that decade are now receding noticeably. The Cold War ended 1989-1991, but the optimism we initially felt was not fulfilled. - The 90s' purely local genocides and wars have sort of died down and been replaced with local conflicts, but now with the powers involving themselves fully. I think incidents in Somalia, Congo, Balkans in the 90s really undermined the authority of the United Nations. And so internatinonal affairs have shifted accordingly.

TV shows - X-Files, Friends, Seinfeld, Sex in the City are all gone. And the social trends they represented -- that is, alien paranoia and government conspiracy theories about genetically modified food (remember the huge anti WTO rallies, books like Fast Food Nation), cheap cafe coffee culture (every Starbucks I've been in recently is still doing business, but the chairs are starting to look moth-eaten, and the chain doesn't have the sheen it used to have), and New York lofts and promiscuity (AIDS is coming back in people's minds), are all gone. So are tatoos, grrrl power (where is Hole now?), Tank Girl, vampires, razor blade self-scarring, etc. When was the last time Bjork made an album everyone listened to (not that she isn't still a good singer, she just got too hairy)? That whole 70s revival that was a hallmark of the 90s has been drained dry (who reads Wallpaper magazine anymore?).

It has been ten years since the Spice Girls were big. Britney is pregnant with child #2. The recent press uproar over Kate Moss's drug habits didn't ruin her career, but it did knock her back a bit. GAP's sales are down. JFK Jr. died. The I.T. financial bubble burst - AOL-Time-Warner merger failed. Big businesses and businesspeople who profitted in the 90s when the post Cold War situation provided a lot of international opportunities were smacked down for bending the rules - Martha Stewart, Conrad Black, Enron, Fannie Mae.

September 11th and everything that came after really put an end to that era of androgynous prosperity (link below).

And good riddance I say. The only reason these bits of wreckage from the 90s are still floating around is because no clear style has emerged for this current decade yet. Politically there is a definite shift from global liberalism to global conservatism. And the signs for this decade that are there are not too promising - I have seen many war vets on the streets with amputated limbs recently. Absolutely everyone now has cell phones, blackberries, ipods. Also, have you noticed since Lord of the Rings that every movie you go to is now filled with CGI effects?

uncertain why it quite is. did not comprehend that folk have been even arguing approximately this subject rely till those days. as a manner to have experienced the genuine essence of the 90s, it quite facilitates to be an 80s infant. Then somebody might have the skill to narrate lots greater to the 90s, the type, the music, television shows, and an excellent style of alternative issues. If somebody grew to become into actually born interior the 90s, they gained't quite have the main bright memories from that decade.
