They have to hold their pants up when they walk. It looks completely ridiculous! Where did this practice come from and why is it so popular?

I've heard through the grapevine that it's a prison fashion. Inmates would sag their pants to let other inmates know that they were receptive to sex. I guess the ex-cons, once they got out were reluctant to let their buddies know what happened inside the cells, but continued to sag out of habit. I'm sure there was a group of younger kids observing the ex cons, and associated a 'tough' image with sagging pants. I'm sure it started in some urban area with a small group, or a gang and was subsequently transmitted all over the city and eventually all over the country.

Saggin started back in the slavery days, due to the fact that our people had to wear clothes that didn't fit and there pants would sag. But if you take the word SAGGIN and spell it backwards it reveals the truth of the people ******. I don't know why its so popular, cause it represents a tuff time for the African American race

This has been a fad for too long. When my son was young, he was running across a busy street and his pants fell down. Hahaha. He went into management and finally pulled his pants up.
Thank you for your information on the "Bird." It almost makes me cry to think about his life. He seemed like such a nice person. He came along two years before my mother died. She love him and her love for him rubbed off on me. Hope that he is happy.

style, it all has to do with style and fashion. Young ladies here in the UK, are wearing really short flaring skirts, that are really low on their hips, in fact, I'd say they almost show their pubic hair. Really looks odd to see the fat bulging out above their hips. Suddenly Halter Tops are all the rage as well, which is odd as no one wanted to wear them last year. And yesterday, I saw a woman who must have been wearing net curtains, I thought they had the same pattern as the ones we just put up on the windows! Showed everything you cared to see if you looked. I must admit she seemed very cool in a heat wave though.

It originated in prisons, where groups did this as a sign of "bucking the system". Kids do it to be accepted as a part of a peer group. The same reason leather jackets and greasy kids stuff was popular in the 50's.

It comes from jailhouse fashion. Prisoners might not get the best fitting pants in the first place, and the story is they would let their pants sag to indicate their availability for sodomy.

I guess it caught on because it's "gangsta".

rap videos. they think it's cool. i don't know why this stays in fashion, and wish it would go away. the other night, a guy came into the place i work and had to dig for change in his low slung pants. he couldn't find any, so went to his car to get some. his effort to find change in his pants caused them to slide down further. as he was walking out, i saw his undies big time. they were dingy and nasty looking. so not cool.

I have two theories:

1. To annoy and irritate adults

2. To announce to other homosexual boys that they're in heat and are ready for breeding.

I tend to think #2 is probably the right answer.

It came from prison inmates having their pants below their a$$ because they had no belts. It then become popular with inner cities thugs, and continued to spread to mainstream america.
