and what song would you have for the anthem of Manchester

It's got to be New Order. They hav become international stars, creating beats which are modern and original, but have remained true to their Mancunian roots, and could even be said to be proud of them. Bernard Sumner has done a Herculean task in coming out of Ian Curtis' (another god like genius, pure Orpheus) shadow to become one of the best preformers the world has seen.
I also do like the Smiths. Their sound went against the usual deluge of synthesizer based pop, creating a unique sound that sounds just as good today as in1983.
As for an anthem, I would choose Blue Monday, by New Order. This is one of the best selling 12" discs ever, a constant source of inspiration across several types of music, includng dance and electronic, pop and even modern indie. The video as well is ninspirational, funny and clever and will never be bettered. It is also the first New Order song I heard and fell in love with. Genius on a little disc.

Definately "The Smiths" are the greatest band to come out of Manchester, and the greatest in the world.

I would also chose "How Soon Is Now" as an anthem closely followed by "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out"

Great Band. Great Music

The Hollies,
Wayne Fontane and the Mindbenders.
Hermans Hermits.

Doesnt matter what Era your looking at, Manchester has produced some great groups and singers. Take That, will have to go on there too, and Shayne Ward, Anyone heard of him since X factor? If you like Music, you can hear good in any group, no matter where they are from. Hmmmm an Anthem? What about, Queen's "We are the Champions" Because we are, at everything.

The best bands/singers are all from Liverpool, Ireland and Canada. Mancs are rubbish. Well except Def Leppard. They're ok. I have never understood the appeal of Oasis. They are just doing a very bad job of pretending to be the Beatles.

The Smiths - How Soon is Now is the greatest.
Next up, New order - True Faith.
Last, Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart.
