Be straight forward.
Don't say "it's not you, it's me"
Don't say "I just want to be friends"
That sucks. Instead tell him the truth. You are uncertain about your future together and you think it is best if you were to part ways now. Instead of trying to carry on a long distance relationship. Those never work.
Be kind, but don't be to emotional. Women tend to get emotional in situations like that which just make things harder.

You should be honest. Once he has a chance to get over your relationship together, he will realize that being single and going off to college isn't that bad after all.
