If god existed before matter, then god does not consist of matter because god cannot have existed before he created himself. What then does god consist of?

God is everything. Sort of like the 'force' in Star Wars. He existed at the start of time, and will continue until the end of time.. He is the force that binds all living things, and is also the force that created all non-living things.
People have different concepts of what god is - but they all amount to the same thing - that he is in everything and everyone.
He is the universal energy that makes up all things.

Try a different approach

Alternating Current AC has a positive value and a negative value in its cycle.

The sum of its cycle = 0 (NOTHING, ZILTCH SQUAT DIDDLY)

Yet the cycle does have an effect.

So you can start with nothing and get a result under some instances.

You should imagine this purely as energy.

If you accept this then the next step is that energy and mass are interchangeable. e=mc² now where have i heard that before???

I am sure you have heard of matter and anti matter.

particles and antiparticles etc etc

People attack question this in the wrong way, usually uninformed.

What does love consist of? Or thought? Or the number 7? Or the soul? Not everything has to be made of matter.

This is simple, there is sooooo much more in this universe than matter, matter actually consists of a very small part of the total energy in the universe. God is made of energy in a different form than matter is. In fact, God is the opposite of matter. He is energy in its most highest spiritual form.

Good question.

And if God existed before space and time (ie: without any space in which to occupy and without any past, present or future) how could he exist in any way that we can ever understand?

It is for exactly this reason that I am firmly agnostic.

An interesting question but i think that there is no universal answer. You have to make one up for yourself. The American Indians believed that wankan tankan was the great mysterious and had a lot to do with circles. What do you believe?

So how big is the universe?

There are questions that will never be answered because we haven't the capacity to believe that something can happen without we humans being in control.
