That is a question that has been pondered by many of human kind from long ages past and the answer is simply that we do not know. Mankind being composed of a finite mind can not correctly comprehend the infinite.

Skilla and Michael B have both provided logical, reasonable and rational answers to an irrational question.
We can only postulate within the bounds of what we know.
Within the limits of human knowledge it is generally accepted that matter and energy are interchangeable. (Without loss)
We are aware of different forms of energy and matter.
Matter exists in the elements (so far discovered) listed in the 'Periodic Table of the Elements.' (Don't delve into 'Dark matter')
Energy has many forms. potential, kinetic, heat, electrical, chemical, mechanical, magnetic, atomic and nuclear.
This is not an exhaustive list therefore your 'God' may be another form of energy.
However, your 'God' may not consist of either matter or energy and, that being the case, totally beyond our comprehension.
People who accept the concept of a 'God' do so in an act of faith.
In the Christian Faith which has the Bible as its guide it is stated:
Hebrews 11, 1 "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."

God has no beginning and no end, like infinity, which no human being can comprehend except in an abstract mathematical sense. If the known universe has boundaries, and is therefore finite, what lies beyond? The idea of infinite space, which goes on forever, is beyond the grasp of human imagination, so we invent arbitrary ''boundaries''. The concept of God is a bit like this; we humanise him in an attemt to understand that which is beyond human understanding.

God is Spirit. In the book of St. John, New Testament, Chapter 5, this fact is spoken of.
You, also, are spirit, but have a physical body. One part passes away and the other exists forever.

Of course.
God is a parable, filling the spaces that people feel uncomfortable about, or can't understand, which for many people seems to be the same thing.
Some find the unknown an exciting challenge, for others it is full of terrors. That is why god is also known as the comforter. He is a big fat dummy to suck.

Think of it like this: Let's say you have a smart dog, and you teach him lots of tricks. He can "speak"(bark), shake hands, roll over, the works. He's a very smart dog, but you can NEVER teach him calculus. He is smart, and he can learn, but only to a point. The question you ask is like the dog wondering what all those numbers mean(in fact he doesn't even know that THEY ARE NUMBERS.) Humans can learn, but only to a point, and the answer to this question is beyond that point.

just in the same way your hard drive expanded from 1 byte to 80 gb and which will still expand, does the universe expand as well.
the files and programs in the hard drive however, if they were 'conscious' as we are, would not ever be aware that the size of the CPU hardly changed in size in our world, nor would they be capable to fathom my presence typing this in or yours reading on, (unless of course they were programed that way, but of course aren't).
In other words, the cyberworld, measured in bytes, is not proportionate to our Lx W x H x time world. the same can be compared to our said 4 dimensional world to godly beings reality.

well as a "matter" of fact we do not know what matter is...
and then there is that silly equation that correlates it to energy....
and antimatter that is starting to become visible to our logic....
and a universe that someone is trying to define as perpetual...
and maybe the key to understanding is inside and outside of us in equal proportion.....
