Horror movies are horrible now. I don't like the blood and guts films at all and its really hard to find a horror film that is just plain scary. Remember Alfred Hitchcock? He could frighten you without ever showing a single drop of blood. The closest he ever came to a blood and guts film was Psycho. One scene out of the entire film had blood in it and it was one of the most terrifying films of all time.
The new variety of horror films is just disgusting. Why anyone would think that watching a person be hacked to pieces could be entertaining, I'll never understand.

Yes I do think that. As a kid I enjoyed all those classic scary movies because they scared the crap out of me. I mean, I am a real chicken but I LOVE that stuff.
Anyways, as I got older I still loved horror movies just as much. So everytime a movie came out I'd get all hyped up about how scary it'd be but then when I saw it....I'd think, what a waste of money. I mean if a really jumpy person like me can't get scared even once in these so called "scary movies" then it isn't a very good movie.
Ahem...example....that Robert de Niro/Dakota Fanning movie Hide and Seek? Stupid. Waste of a movie rental.
Also, the movie Hostel sounded like it'd be really good and scary but all it did was succceed in making me want to throw up.

In Stephen King's only Non-fiction book, "Danse Macabre", he relates how the thinking goes when writing a book OR making a movie. He says there are 3 levels to being scared, three categories. One is "Terror", which is more psychological; "Horror", which is more visceral, and "the Gross Out", which is self explanatory.
The finest of these is Terror, of course, but what terrifies YOU in the theater may leave everyone else yawning. Horror is next down, easier to achieve, just showing you someone in a grotesque rubber suit can make you feel horrified. "Gross Out" is easiest to achieve because hardly anyone (besides 15 year old boys) enjoys seeing zombies ripping the flesh off their victims, eyes being gouged out, etc. Because it's easiest and most universal, this is what directors and writers are producing. When the kids stop going to see this week's latest CGI-fest, they'll stop making these movies.

Unfortunately, I do think that most horror movies these days are relying on gore instead of good story telling.
While Japenese horror films are often gorier than what we see here in the states, I'd recommend checking out what you can from Takashi Miike, specifically Audition. His movies offer a (somewhat) realistic build up to a horrifying end, rather than using the tired old "psycho killer" approach.

totally. I think we've just gotten to a new level of violence. All the horror movies out now are about torture and mutilation. It's not a psycho with a knife chasing you thru the house. I think we've just gotten used to the "old" type of horror movies and this is the next step. After this will be straight cannibilism. It's scarey yes, but it's just so overly graphic..it just becomes gross.

All horror movies are disgusting, too much blood and all that. They just don't interest me no more. People are not really creative with movies nowadays. In "clean" movies there are always happy endings, in action the bad guy always dies, the black guy (I know some of you may not agree with me and I'm not being racist) always dies first. The majority of movies just aren't original enough, you practically predict a movie before it starts.

I think they are more about blood and gore...but if they had a better way to freak people out it would make them great...but i love them just the way they are...actually i thought Saw was a very freaky movie...threw me for a loop

for the most part, i think you are correct...however, there are a few recent movies that have messed with my mind...like High Tension...coincedentally, its directed by the same guy who did The Hills Have Eyes...but that was a french film...I do think that most American films are more about gore, while not that "scary" its at least entertaining...

I think so.. the old horror films before will leave you awake all night or scared of closing the lights but now they will just scare you for a while then when you leave the theater you would forgot about it.
