Hi,
yes it would definitely be cheaper as there are a lot of companies that deal with taxi rental service, however driving around in India can be a bit risky as drivers are rash and have very little road manners.
You should get a hotel reservation for a few days in advance so you have a place to stay when you get there, then just stay in Delhi to get the feel of being in India as the change from the west is drastic. Ask around at the hotel for taxis, bargain for good prices. Also check out the train service, there are good trains, special prices and services for foreign travellers which could be advantageous.
Watch out for touts, change your money only at banks and legal agents. Be careful if you are travelling alone.
Have a nice trip.

it is always cheaper to do your own arrangements because the agent has to make some commission for his work.
But if you can afford it, why not make the necessary arrangements the first time and then learn as you go? Do you know prices in india or how to go about renting a car or getting yourself to a railway station or bus depot or how to get the best hotels in your price range?
Its up to you. The first time I went travelling india, I had a wonderful time. It was 5 star plus all the way and I let the hotel make the arrangements for me.
But as I travelled and got used to India, and started learning the people there and taking a walk to see the places I could not see 5 star way, I learnt to do my own bookings and my own travelling.
It is possible but dont get disheartened. Just beware.

Its up to you. The first time I went travelling Delhi, It had a wonderful time. It was 5 star all the way and I let the Voler Cars make the arrangements for me. Search self driven Car Rental and see what comes up. You will be able to find a car rental office near you. I'm sure with you living in delhi that you'll find a good selection of companies. You'll be able to find the prices on each competitor’s website. One of the good car rental agency which I prefer is Voler Cars.

I observe that you have not been able to finalise on your proposed trip to North India and doing a lot of homework on locations at different sides of Delhi, mode of transport, stay and related issues.
Now, confining to your above question, how many of you are travel ling together? What is your budget? For how many days you want to be on move? Where all have you finalised to go on hired car/taxi?.....
Cutting short the details, from Delhi a hired cab charges for atleast 200 kms distance covered or actuals, whichever is higher, per day basis for a chauffeur driven cab, toll gate charges and parking charges extra. Besides, the drivers take Rs.100 to 200 per night charges all inclusive for each overnight stay. On formal bills, amount attracts a service tax of Rs. 12.24% in some situations. Now for cabs, a small segment AC/non AC car charges in the range of Rs. 4.50 to Rs.7 per km, depending on various factors. Whereas a medium segment car would cost in the range of Rs. 6 to 9 per kilometer.....Tips extra.
If you are so particular about each and every aspect, money is a concern and preferences, convenience etc. how far matter, I suggest that you make atleast 2-3 different plans. Work out their costings by different options and leaving some margins for contingencies, finalise your trip. By now you have quite a feedback by various answerers and your own efforts.
