I work in an office for women trying to leave prostitution. And yes it is just as simple as that. Needing to buy diapers for their kids. Pay the rent. Or running away from an abusive home at 15 and having no way to look after themselves. A lot of them got hooked on drugs either before they started hooking on the streets did it as a means of coping with sellig themselves. An extremely high percentage came from homes where there was abuse in the families. So they were numbed to the streets when they got there.

Something to realize however. The stories that you hear about slavery are true. Young girls broought over from othe countries and put to work. We haven;t seen ay proof of it here in our office but it doesn't mean it hasn't happened. And it has been documented in the larger cities. Once they are too old to be toys they end up on the streets.

Hmmm... the best answer is to interview them at Geylang.

But family problems ? poverty ? just like that ? can be true, as different people is with different problems or difficulties.

My opinion is, the major reason because of forcing into prostitution rather than willing. As for what force them, that's another story, but likely is financial related.

She might have kids to take care of, not enough money for college, can't get a better job and I'm sorry, but McDonalds does not do the trick. Could be she's a runaway, or kidnappee, and is being forced to have sex for money. She could have a drug addiction, but most prostitutes I know don't. She could have gotten into something lighter (ie stripping) and from there went down hill and now can't get back out.
To the other posters-don't be so quick to judge.

Sadly to say , if they are run-aways, then the pimp, or street gangs or even other prostitutes will show them the way to big easy $$$$$$$$$$$. But they never tell them about the really bad, sad, and ugly side of it. Drugs, Diseases, and getting beat-up. Its a very hard sad and lonely life. its the oldest profession, but there are so many other things to do with their lives. Its sad to say, but even the ones that are abused when young, think that this is a way of life.

Young girls who run away have trouble finding a way to make a living because of their age and are lured into it because of the money. Some girls have a bad live at home and do not learn to respect themselves and are lured by the easy money. Then some see their mothers having sex with one boyfriend after another and think of it as a normal way of life so they might as well get paid for it. To most it is easy money but degrading.

Please, the ones I talked to were abused by relatives or husbands and they fall into a trap that might involve an endless debt to a drug pusher. They run away, live on the streets and start living life on a daily lack of cash basis. You should know that they are not in the least bit trustworthy, the telltale trait is they abandoned their children. They need help but I don't know what it is. I'm not a professional counselor.

Usually problems at home. Being kicked out then leaving and not having any money. Bad influences. Sometimes a sexual appetite that can't be stopped and they figured... might as well make a profit from it. Lots of things really. Even abuse.

when they are struggling and dont have any money.. and when they need to provide for their kids and things like that.. 300 dollars a night of prostitution is better than 200 dollars a week to provide for your child.. i know.. i always watch it on this show called jerry springer

there are several different reasons. One is money (financial desperation). That coupled with no morals in one's upbrining can lead to it. Another can be emotional. An emotional emptiness that one thinks will be filled that way (go figure!).
