LOL!! I heard a similar question about why black people like rap. I don't think it's a race thing. I think you just don't like the music. There's plenty of white people who don't, either.

Ok, first off, you probably listened to 30 seconds of some shitty goth rock. That stuff's really depressing. Metal isn't depressing, it's angry, at least most of the time. I listen to a lot of melodic metal, it actually covers every emotion there is.
And if you want to point out that metal is angry and violent, I'll just point out that rap is too.
And as for why white people like metal, I don't know about everyone else but I'm a Viking.
I'm gonna say that metal is to Vikings as rap is to African tribes. It has some tiny roots in the traditional sound of the culture.

Everyone's brain is wired differently. Some of that wiring is neurochemical and genetic. Simply put, some things just strike the fancy of more people in some races than in others. For example a larger percentage of Tahitian toddlers will get up and dance to the drums than European or Asian toddlers. Heavy metal just makes us white folks want to throw our heads forward (and back) to the beat. Kind of like the way drum beats makes some of us want to slam our hips right & left.
As far as the dark side of this or any music goes, a large percentage (not all) of people that go for it are burned out on cutsie-putsie happy-dappy kiddy stuff that was crammed down their throat before they became teenagers, and this stuff dark music feels like a breath of fresh air. Sounds backwards? How about; the same reason a just-cleaned dog will roll in the dusty dirt. Or, after eating too many sweets, you crave salty chips or french fries.
Fortunately most people grow out of the dark music. Look at your parents. Ask your grandparents what your parents used to listen to.

Its not depressing! I agree 100% with mysticmistx's above answer. I cant stand EMO or screamo.
Metal is inspiring and beautiful. I cant stand this modern commercialized music that all sounds the same. I enjoy music with a band.
But for me I like different kinds of music not just 'metal'. I like alternative rock, industrial rock,classic rock,grunge, classical piano, instrumental, and even some christian music.

I think it starts at your teen years, if you are white you can choose rap but be a wigger and get beatup. Or you could listen to all the various forms of metal music that way stay neutral.
There are alot of Latino metal bands and I seen some black guitar and base players for metal bands before

I don't listen to it because it "releases my anger" I don't have any anger to release and I'm not depressed. I don't listen to that emo crap but I like modern rock. But I like some dark music because it inspires me to write or something and I also love the music and usually the person who sings it.

i don't listen to metal. i listen to rock and stuff like rock and i listen to emo. but also can you say the same about none white people. they listen to rap. which is good occassionally but most the stuff i heard is about girls,getting drunk at clubs, shooting, and stuff like that. so maybe i didn't hear the good rap songs or maybe i just made my point. when i listen to music i like for it to match the mood im in. if im happy i listen to happy music if im mad i listen to something angry. but if i listen to rap well i haven't heard music that matches my different moods. i hope i made my point.

I'm not white and I love the stuff, it's different from the happy unrealistic crap, and the crap about pimping hos and robbing people, although I listen to all that stuff and enjoy it too.
