Fortunately they have small teeth but they can have a very aggressive personality. We have an island just off the coast of Perth which is loaded with these things. We've marked something between three and four hundred of them and to our surprise we started running across some of the snakes who were blind. Blind because their eyes had been pecked out. We noticed that this was as a result of the activities of the seagulls. The snakes feed on seagull chicks, seagull eggs and there is a seagull rookery on the island. Seagulls of course don't appreciate this attention to their next generation and they attack the snakes vigorously and peck their eyes out. The startling discovery was that as we kept coming back to this island over two or three years we kept finding the same blind snakes which we'd marked. When we measured their body condition they were found to be in better condition than snakes with eyes. Of course you would imagine that an animal which is a predator, which hunts, that the loss of a major sensory modality such as vision would be death for it. They don't have a welfare system like us and you would imagine that their life span would be rather short and not lengthened. We actually saw a blind male copulating with a sighted female. So we put this paper together. It got picked up by the press particularly in France and we've had a wonderful run with it.

Heck yeh. They have eyes. I have killed many of them when I was a kid. Me and the neighborhood kids use to chase down the snakes with sticks and beat the snakes to pulb,( living in the countryside and the rural area). Afterward, we would beat the dead snake's head to pulb, especially the eyes, so the female snakes wouldn't be able to seek vengence on us by recognizing our images through the eyes of the dead snake(old legends). They said snakes would hide under the enemy's bed or on top of the bed waiting to bite the victim at night out of vengence.

Have you ever seen a snake? I've got one on my shoulder right now, his name is Fellagund and he's staring out the window with two beady little eyes.

Yea they do but they're hard to see cause they also have an inner lid behind the regular one. Like lizards-they keep it closed alot of the time. It looks like a frosted clear color.

yes, but they don't see in the same way humans do. they rely more on their sense of smell and the heat seeking ability in their tongue. that's why they're always flicking it in and out to check their surroundings.
