If a homeless man, while searching through trash for recycleable goods to earn money, found $21,000 in bond certificates of yours and responsibly returned them to you, how much would you give him as a reward?

The owners gave him a $100.00 reward (slightly less than 0.5%).

Hey, I read about this story. This guy could very easily have found a way to cash in those bonds, especially in the dire straits he was in. I don't believe I would give him the whole thing but I would give him much more than what the people who owned the bonds gave him. This was such a good story that many people across the country have been sending him money for his good deed. He had lost his job, moved back to Michigan I believe and couldn't get a job. He's using the money people sent him to get an apartment and I think he got a job offer too.

Wow.

I don't know. I mean I would think that a grand (about 5 %) would be good, but I bet he would be appreciative of anything you give him. I guess it depends on how thankful you are you got them back.

Reward is valued at how much you feel the (person, object, or indiscretion) is worth.

If I'd thrown out $21,000 then clearly I don't need it, he can have all of it.

25% you would have been out whole investment and he could use the cash, not to mention could have kept it all, since you did throw them out.
