You will love the winters there if you are leaving from a northern state. I lived there in the early to mid 80's and the people were raciest then. Try the fried green tomatoes and okra. It is awesome. Don't go around talking about how much you liked where you use to live if from the north as many still hate northerners. My family still live there so I know what I'm talking about. The people are generally friendlier and warmer than northerners. I hope you will grow to love it and make it a happy place for you to live.

I LOVE Alabama. About a year ago I was attracted to the state for some reason, and this June I went there for the first time, and we toured pretty much the whole state. It's the best state, or best place, ever. The people there are very friendly and helpfull. Also, land and gas are cheaper (at least chepaer than in VA). People talk with southern accents (of course), and expect to pick one up. The food is great, and this is coming from a vegetarian. It's very beautiful there, and if you don't mind heat then the wheater is great. Not to mention the beaches are WONDERFUL! Also, don't be fooled by what people may say. There's a lot to do there, you just have to look a little. Up north in the Muscle Shoals/Tuscumbia area espessially, so if you ever make your way up there then you'll have plenty to do. If your moving by the gulf then you'll always have something to do with the dolphin tours, etc.
Also, the people there are no more rednecky than the people in Virginia. Don't listen to what people will tell you. Alabama is not a racist state at all, and there are not a ton of stupid people there either. And I can't emphasize enough how nice the people are there.

I've lived in AL almost all my life. I've also lived in Georgia and Germany, but always come back here. I love it. Yeah, you will have culture shock, but if you are moving to south AL you will be closer to Florida, which is cool, too. Beaches!!! (We all call Florida a northern state that broke off and floated down south.) If you are moving from a big place like New York or Detroit, it's going to seem as if you moved to another country. It will take some time, but it is totally worth it!
Just like anywhere else, you'll meet great people and idiotic people. Your accent WILL be commented on. You say you don't have an accent? Just wait. Also, you'll find all sorts of people, and I bet whatever you are into there will be some of those folks there, too. Just be friendly and open to whatever comes your way and you will be fine. Oh, and be prepared for some hot, hot, HOT summers that seem to go on forever!!

It will be a culture shock. The people in the south can be absolutely awesome. You have your flakes, just like anywhere else. But, you might really love the south in many ways. There are some very good hearted people down there.
One thing I saw when I lived in Dallas from 79 to 86 was prejudice. It existed then. I'm told that it still exists today. But, for the most part, you'll love the people.
Ya'll take care now. Hear?
