Because they are opportunistic leaches trying to bilk the elderly and other vulnerable people out of their (usually very small) life savings.
People seek out what they need, they don't need to be disturbed while eating dinner to have some rude dimwit try to sell them a time share in the Poconos.
Did you really have to ask?

I realize that they are people, and trying to keep their job, which is a very stressful one. I don't so much blame them as their employers, really, and I figure they must be in pretty desperate need of that job if they're keeping it. That said, what does seriously irritate me is that they will speak for at least five minutes without a pause, usually without checking whether or not you have the time to talk (I've been just about to step out on several occasions or very busy cooking dinner, etc), and I often have to repeat three times that I'm not interested before they give up, especially for people trying to sign me up for a credit card. People answering the call end up having the choice of staying on the phone longer than they want or just hanging up on the telemarketer. They need to give people the option *first* to talk to them or not, and take no for an answer if the answer is no.

Its not that people hate telemarketing, its the way it is done. Telemarketers seem to always call at the wrong time, if you tell them you are not int rested, they will not leave you alone until you buy or hang up. I think that it is great that telemarketing employs millions of people, and gives people with disabilities a good job. But over the years telemarketers have screwed up their reputation by frustrating the consumer. And when some of them call, they don't say " Hi, this is _________ with AT&T", they say "Hi, this is _______, can I speak with _______", they try to make it sound like they know you, but just want to sell something.

I used to be a telemarketer for Greenpeace. I had all these noble ideas about the purpose of what I was doing, but quit after two days when I realized that I had to get two suckers a day to donate $30 to pay for the expense of having me as an employee. It really sounds like begging and welfare to me then.
I also worked graveyards for a number of years. This means I have to sleep during the day. My mother was deathly ill and I would keep the phone on so that in case of an emergency I could help her. However, I was awoken at least 5 times a day by these leaches. I don't care about your products, I live without TV so that I don't have to watch your ads. Quit invading my privacy.

I understand that your job is your job but for myself, I have everything I need and know what else I want and buy it when I can. I don't want credit card protection because it would be a waste of money for us. And when I can answer the phone, when my toddler isn't going from one thing to another, I just want some peace and don't want to tell some stranger that I don't want or need what they are trying to sell. Honestly, I only answer my door when I know the person and I treat the phone the same way.
And if I offered you 5 minutes of my time, would you offer 10 or 20 minutes of your time to clean up after what my son got into while we were on the phone?
Just keep trying to call all those lonely old women. They always answer and talk.

well, my reasons are thus:
- many telemarketers who i've been in contact with tell outright lies. Saying things like, 'you get this free, just for being on the phone' and then, two minutes later, saying, "I never said free"
- not taking "NO" for an answer. If I say, "no thanks, I'm not interested" and they keep on talking - that's just rude, and inconsiderate. they leave me no choice but to either hang up on them, or be rude right back to them.
- still not taking no for an answer - I've had many CALL BACK after I've hung up on them AFTER i've said no to whatever offer they had
- purposely calling at inconvenient times. It's well known that they call during dinner - forcing you to leave the table and go deal with them, or leave the phone ringing - which is very annoying.
So, there are a few of my reasons for not liking them - and for adding my number to the "do not call" list.
I have nothing against the telemarketers themselves, however that does not mean I will waste any portion of my day listening to them read a script, trying to sell me a product I've already told them I don't need.

If I wanted help or a service I would go and seek it. My home is my sanctuary and they invade my privacy. And in today's hectic, fast paced life, the five minutes you propose is valuable time I could be using toward more quality time with my family. So that is why if you call me I will still curse you out. Though I have registered with the Do Not Call registry, these vermin corporations call my house under the pretense of being a survey. Answer the survery and you qualify for something.
Do you get my drift child? If I wanted services or products I would seek them myself. I don't need you robbing my time with my family.
For the record I used to do telemarketing myself. I worked for the man who invented it.

They call at the wrong time, trying to sell you the wrong things that you don't need. They are intrusive, you may get several calls from the same company but by different incessant telemarketers trying to out-do each other with the same boring opening lines and crap. Their insistence makes you want to go into crime with vivid thoughts of yourself armed with an M16 assault rifle and wondering when technology will provide a way to send a bullet through the phone line. By the time they are done, you are left wondering what happened to your favorite TV show's character at LOST!!!

It is uninvited/unsolicited/unwanted. It is an annoyance, an irritation, rude, and a waste of time. They choose a job that pisses people off, and so they CHOOSE to be irritating. Don't give me the line of how they have no other career choice - nonsense. McDonald's is always hiring. Telemarketing is wrong and in some cases, illegal. (It should be outlawed in all cases, if you ask me). At least the rule should be that you have to opt-in if you want the calls - not opt out if you don't.

Sounds kinda like you're wanting to sell us on being sold to over the phone. *smirk*
My main thing with telemarketers is that they are usually calling to sell me something that I couldn't imagine ever wanting or needing, and many of them refuse to take "no" for an answer, even when I honestly tell them that I just have no money!

Because they try to ram sh*t you don't need down your throat, usually when you are:
- In the Bath / Shower
- TRYING to cook / eat
- Having sex (if ur lucky enough to get any)
- When ur in the middle of a job and got your hands covered in oil / paint / soil / or just taken out the trash.
- Trying to take a dump or go for a p*ss.
A bit like E-mail / Guestbook spammers, really (except you choose the time you go online to put up with them).
