The citizens of the District of Columbia are taxed, just like the rest of us, but they do not have representation in the House or Senate. They pay federal taxes, but have no representation.

The big issue in the district of columbia is the way that politics have devided the city.In the eyes of the politicians there is no need to have a complete local government because the national government is there in the city. The people of DC are not able to do certain things that the rest of the country takes for granted. Taxation without representation is the principle that this country was founded upon. The colonists were upset because parliament was handing down taxation sanctions to the colonies without any conferrance with the colonists themselves. this was very unjust because the colonists were not part of the main political process and therefore they were not given a voice on the floor of the parliament and felt that they should not have to be taxed if they are not even a part of the decision making process.

In early American history, in the 1760s, the English Parliament, in need of funds to pay their debts incurred in the late war with France decided to make the colonists pay some of the expenses in the form of external taxes on certain comodities such as tea; it seemed fair, considering that they had been major beneficiaries in the fruits of war. The colonists, however, having gotten used to basically being left alone to run their own affairs, resented what they say as an intrusion on their rights, and protested, in some cases violently. The slogan "No taxation without representation" was invented to justify the protests, because the colonies sent no elected members to the Parliament in London--of course, this was merely a red herring, a side issue to distract attention from their real grievances.
Today, the slogan is used by activists in D.C. to advocate for admission to the Union as a state, which is a somewhat preposterous notion in itself. But the slogan is being misused here--the Constitution gives Congress sole representative authority over the city, which means that they already have representation, from the 535 members of Congress plus their own non-voting rep; they only elect the one, of course, and this person has no function except for the right to debate, but it's more than the govermnment gave territorial governments in the past. Plus, Washingtonians can vote in Presidential elections since 1961, with the 23rd Amendment, something else previous territorial governments had no right to do.

Taxation without representation was the idea behind what started the war for Independence from Britain in America. Essentially, Britain taxed the colonies excessively and had no representation or voice in the government. They did not have any rights but had to pay taxes to a government that did not listen to them.

it just means that the powers that be are allowed to tax you without your having any representation or say so in the legislative body which levies the tax.

HA! That's funny (I mean, poetic justice)(or something like that)
They pay taxes but can't vote, they can't own guns, and yet... Washington DC's low murder rate of 69 per 100,000 is due to strict gun control, and Indianapolis' high murder rate of 9 per 100,000 is due to the lack of gun control. (or something like that)
and a woman raped and strangled is morally superior to a woman with a smoking gun and a dead rapist at her feet. (or something like that)
The 2nd Amendment, ratified in 1787, refers to the National Guard, which was created 130 years later, in 1917. (or something like that)

In simple terms...
They take your money and do not provide services for the money rendered (no protection, etc.). It's extortion.
