Depends on what part of the country you live in.
In the Pacific Northwest, a family of five could live nicely on $50,000 a year ... a modest but comfortable home, two late model but inexpensive vehicles, health care for children, adequate food, clothing, and other things one desires like electronics. An occassional night out or day on the town. Would have to spend wisely, but could enjoy life.

I managed to raise four kids as a single mom on less than $12,000 a year ... yes, we were below poverty line, poor in money, but rich in relationship, love, and caring. This was during the 1990's. It was not easy, but we managed. You do what you have to do when you have to do it.

So should it be illegal for a single person to work for less than what it costs for a comfortably for a family of 5?

because that is what a minimum wage is, making it illegal to work for less than a set amount, making employers cut jobs.

If you can not afford 3 kids, don't have 3 kids.

No one in America is poor, Iraqis live on nothing literally.

I'm not sure how much money it would take to keep a family of five comfortable, but I know that the poverty level for a family of three in Illinois is somewhere around $15,000/year and the minimum wage here is only $13,000/year (for a full time worker).

Now does that include sending the children to work in a sweatshop?
