You mean that you really arent friendly or caring, and so you don't want to smile because you don't want people to think that you really are? Thats really all a smile means ..."hello, welcome". Whats so bad about that?

Singaporeans are not natural smiling people and don't have initiative when showing basic courtesy. This year Singapore is a host for international delegates. And as an Asian nation we should extend our Asian welcome which by far shows the most hospitality amongst the races. The government as it always will, is telling its citizens to smile. But honestly how many of us will get to meet with any of the delegates here. Only those in the retail and hospitality industries will have a chance and they should be smiling anyway. For everyday people, the conference will come and go without the slightly of notion that it was ever here in the first place. Smiling is a good, it lightens any situation and brings about good will and feeling when you do smile to another person. I smile naturally to anyone and anything. Just be careful who you smile at though - I smiled (friendly smile ok!) at this older guy at bus stop, he smiled back with a certain interest which startled me cos no Singaporean reacts like that they either ignore me or look away, upon closer inspection had a 'clean' face for a guy and his eye brows looked shaped. Yikes!!!!

Actually it really depends on individual. Some can have a good smile while others dun like to smile. So be yourself and don't pretend as it looks very artificial to others

Why say "pretend" when some people are genuine?
Obviously you dont smile, do you...But I am sure not everyone thinks the same as you. One person not smiling does not mean that the entire population is unsmiling right?

A smile is recognized as a sign of friendship and welcome all over the world. Are you saying that Singapore folk are not friendly, and do not welcome guests to Singapore?
:-D Perhaps you just don't like to be told what to do by 'the powers.'
