What could cause this & can I fix the problem myself without hiring someone? Please help, I have a dissabled child that lives in my home with breathing problems, so it needs to be fixed ASAP. Thanks.

Check your air filter, a dirty filter can cause low air flow and cause the unit to ice-up. If this isn't the problem, you'll need to call a repairman to check your freon charge. Low freon will also cause the coils to freeze.

I seriously doubt that greasing the A coils will get rid of the frosting. You could check the filter located in the general area of the A coil in the air handler as a blocked filter will slow down the air going across the coils can cause them to frost up or the A coils themselves can be blocked with the same effect. The condenser coils located outside can be blocked with dirt or grass clippings causing the system to operate inefficiently and cause the A coils to frost up. If the condenser fan is not running it will not cool the condenser coils off causing the A coils to frost up.

After checking all that I have mentioned with no luck then the system may be low in refrigerant and a licensed professional needs to be called.

The problem is caused by the coils getting too cold and freezing the condensation in the air. If you can access the unit you can just put some kind of lubricant or oil over them and it will prevent ice from forming.

Go to the local hardware store and get some pipe insulators( foam that goes around the pipe) they are fairly cheap and you shouldn't need much.
