my grand father was born in india.he was british passport holder.
issued by british consulate.so he was british subject by birth.so he was british citizen on that date. what the meaning of british subject by birth nationality status.

I am curious on what you are really trying to find out. If you or him are trying to immigrate, or just looking into family history. If it is for him or if you want to know for what it means to you.

You both should have the rights of a Commonwealth citizen. check out the link. If you are looking for Citizenship, that looks fairly easy to access, but takes 5 years.

But for British Citizenship, as far as I can figure neither of you would. Unless there is further information that you didn't present. Basically, your grandfather probably became an Indian Citizen in 1950 as agreed by Britain and India. He would have had to do something to remain a British Citizen. Then British rules changed in 1981.
