it used to mean, "happily excited", "keenly alive and exuberant" or "having or inducing high spirits"

Then the meaning changed to "brilliant in color"

Then it changed to "given to social pleasures"

Then it changed to "of, relating to, or used by homosexuals"

Now of course it means (at least in England) something that is "not good", or "bad" under the orginal meaning of Bad being Bad and not, good.

When looked at in this light, watching how the meaning changed, you can almost understand it's changes in meanings.

Who knows what it will mean tomorrow?

It meant to be happy. I remember hearing my grandmother use the word do describe any relative that came by while drinking, she would mutter under her breath, "Well he/she certainly seems gay this evening!" She only approved of booze in her rum cake, and it would knock you on your butt, so she never allowed us children to have any of it...We sneaked a few times, so most likely if she had caught us she would have said we were "gay" too.

Remember the Christmas song: Deck the Halls

Deck the halls with boughs of holly!
Fa lalalala lala lala
Tis the season to be jolly!
Fa lalalala lala lala

Don we now our gay apparel!
Fa lala lalala la lala......

Somehow I don't think that line in the song that mentions "gay apparel" means for everyone to go jump up and dress like a drag queen! I could be wrong?
