She's furious. In the same breath that he proposes to her, he insults her family - and admits that he broke up the romance between Mr. Bingley and her sister because of the bad connections she has.

Until that moment, I don't think Lizzie was even aware that Darcy had those kinds of feelings for her, and his condescending proposal was not exactly the best way to go about winning her heart when she's spent the good part of the first half of the book convinced he's completely stuck-up.

Darcy had overheard Elizabeth's mother talk of her daughters marrying well. He had thought her crass and beneath good society and mentions this to his friend, Mr Bingley. When it is suggested that he dance with Elizabeth he refuses, saying: "She is not handsome enough to tempt me."

Unfortunately, Elizabeth had overheard his comments and when he proposed she mentions his "superior" attitude, and taunts him saying she could never marry such a "proud" man. Darcy, now putting his other foot in his mouth, agrees that the family is beneath him!

She was more angry at him at that moment than surprised but I think he also was rude to say something bad about her family when he proposed. But, in the end, a better Mr. Darcy marries a calmer Elisabeth.Loved that book !!!!

at the end when he proposed, Elizabeth said yes. Although the author didn't say Darcy was excited, I jumped out of my chair and did the victory dance.
