I know a lot of English Lit Grads go into PR. Your flair for the English language and your understanding of the structures of literature will stand you in good stead. Also, many train as proof readers for publishing houses etc. My wife's an English Lit. Grad from Bristol Uni, she went on to do an MA in Medieval Studies, but it seems she's now "over qualified" to do most things, she's playing music for a living now.

The important thing is to find something you love doing, find out how to start out doing it and go for it. Unfortunately having a degree no longer means you'll fall straight into a high powered job. I graduated in 1998 with a Theology Degree from Bristol University and I've been working in Social Housing for 5 years. You never know what sort of career will just pick you up and take you along with it.

Anyway, good luck, working life is a challenge but it's worth taking, and it's worth dropping jobs you hate as soon as you can, otherwise you'll feel like you've wasted precious time.

Take care, and stay focussed on carving your own path and not following the footsteps of those who've gone before!

An English Lit degree can be used in every field of employment. I work in Scientific Publishing (at the moment), and at least a dozen of my colleagues have English Lit degrees. I will be starting an Open University English Lit degree in October 2007.

Previously I worked in the Social Services Department of my local council, 2 of my immediate colleagues had English Lit degrees, and a 3rd was working on an Open University English Lit degree.

Publishing, advertising and journalism are probably the best bets, but you must be able to use an indefinite article correctly. If you have other talents such as personability and good sense, there are many possibilities in business. If you are consumed by Milton or Keats, you are doomed.

Two choices:

(1) Grab a broom - there's roads to be swept
(2) Go back to University, and this time do a PROPER degree!
