In the mall, it is a self esteem factor. They look better by comparison.
Now in a club, it's a saftey valve. "I would love to, but I am here with my friend..." and they point to Bertha Bohemoeth. Now, a man has to have a dedicated wingman to take one of those for the team. If a guy can make another guy be seen in public with Bertha, he may be worth something. If not, he can buzz off. And then if they see a cute one they like, they can always ditch Bertha. It isn't like she aint used to sitting home on a Saturday Night anyway, at least she got out for a little while.
Now, of course, they really could just be good friends... But then again, a woman without an adgenda... Hard to believe! :) *ducks handbags*

It is because in many cases people like to be the center of attention. I think if you look closer at the people you are specifically referring to, you will find that the "Hot Chick" may not have very high self esteem and is looking to have what you are describing as "ugly chicks" around to help them feel better about themselves. This also will put them in the "most wanted list" in their group of friends, girls will want to be like her and guys will want to be with here.

I think it's so the good looking ones feel better about themselves by comparing themselves to the ugly ones, which inturn make the ugly ones think they are good looking because they are hanging out with a good looking girl. I also think it's to discourage guys from coming up and talking to them, and dare I say it? Good looking girls become insecure around other good looking girls, so they'd rather just hang out with some ugly girls and feel great about themselves.

Duh....so we shine even brighter! Plus it's nice to give the ugly ones the opportunity to be around us! They can aspire to look and act like the good looking ones!

Well duhhhhhhhh, It highlights them even more, so their precious self-centered egos are fortified even more. PLUS the fat / ugly chicks feel better about themselves because they are allowed the "privilege" of being associated with "Barbie".

maybe because they're friends or maybe looks aren't that important to them....you should maybe try looking a little deeper.
