What I mean is, I need to be there for an event on one day. Is it worth going just for a few days or do you need at least a week to get over flights etc?

I'd say that a weekend is definitely too short. Go for a month at least...even though that can be a bit short, but it should be fine! Hope you have a great time in South Africa!

Where will you be going? CT, JHB, DBN?
If you are flying from Europe then the time difference wont be that big. So it will be quick to adapt even though it is a long flight. If you are going to JHB then I would stay a week, all you can do is shop and see some of the sites. Dbn, you can go to the beach and shop and see sites but it is winter so a week and a bit should be enough. CT is geared towards tourists. Try stay for at least 10 days and time it so you get both weekends in those 10 days. You cant swim there because the water is to cold but there is lots to do there. Hire a car wherever you decide to go, we don't have a very good public transportation system and Private taxis are very expensive. I hope you enjoy your stay here.

Although there is no jet lag (South Africa is one hour ahead of UK time), the flight from London to Johannesburg is 8 or 9 hours, which proves to be very tiring (unless you're one of those people that can sleep perfectly on a plane).
I would suggest you go for at least one week, because the first day will be a write off as you will be tired from the flight.
Special events for Johannesburg, well, if you come out of there alive, that will be a special event.
I would suggest you stop off at the Lost City, it's definately a show case, and you'll be safe in there.
Be sure to check out http://www.crimexposouthafrica.org/ and heed their warnings about hot spots to avoid while you over there.

Good luck

There is no jetlag involved and I see you have had sufficient warning about the violent crime. Do not rely on their Tourist sites for accurate info on crime as they are covering up like you cannot believe and trying to tell visitors it is no worse there than anywhere else.Norwich Union have it as their number 1 most dangerous destination for British Tourists to visit and not without reason. It is a big country so you are not going to see it all in a week. Best you pick an area and spend a week there. Be warned it is very expensive there although some South Africans are still under the illusion that their volatile currency exchange rate makes it inexpensive. However, the main thing is the crime so dont go anywhere ( and I mean anywhere) without being accompanied by one or two other people.

10 days to two weeks is a decent period. After the 12 - 15 flight you will take at least a day to recover then you want to enjoy yourself and the company of your friends then before you know it it is time to pack up and get back to the UK.

Dont listen to baldyoldgit, he sounds just like his name. He is so negative about SA, weigh out all the advice. It is not unsafe if you are not aware. You can walk through London and be a victim of crime. Look at all the stabbings that have happened in the past few months. YOu will be fine

I was born in South Sfrica and go there every 2 years, iits a 12 hour flight you don;t get jet lag because they are only 1-2 hours ahead. If you have never been before don't waste the experience a go for a couple of days you may never return enjoy it a spend at leaset a week if not more

The flight is between 10-12 hours but depending on flight it normally is overnight so you do not miss out on a day. I thing a week would be the best as less than that is a bit hectic

How long have you got???? How long is a piece of string? What's ys budget? If i were you, I'd check with yr inviters to see if other foreigners coming, as usually a "must-do" list is compiled or a site-seeing trip organised. Also, check out SA tourism on-line, as they are very switched on. My must do: Cape Town, Vineyards, Garden Route, Madikwe, Eastern Province/Mocambique (visas on entry?). Big cities are big cities everywhere - be VERY careful in SA. Travel to neighbouring countries is relatively easy - try Okovango Delta in Botswana and Chobe - once there its possible to cross into 4 countries in one day!!!! Brilliant travels there. Hope this is helpful. Enjoy

depends what you want, if a beach then I would say two weeks, but to see the country then at least a month and even then you will only flit across the place.
