In any language, we have patterns that we use daily...i.e. "Good Morning, how are you?...I am fine, thanks and you?". This is a pattern. We learn these patterns from parents, teachers and by reading. Reading is important, as you will see patterns and while you won't remember them all, you will begin to get the sentence pattern idea. Speaking to foreigners is useful but unless they are teachers, they simplify sentences and use poor grammar to make it easy for you to understand them. In many countries, children learn by rote, that is they repeat and repeat sentences from a book, mainly to pass exams, but they don't speak the language, they can write but the most important thing is to speak. Opening the mouth and using a foreign language is hard but you've got to begin. Even if you use poor grammar, a teacher will understand you and encourage you...the grammar isn't so important as people think...but opening your mouth is. Also a lot of communication (about 50%) is by body language so talking over a telephone is difficult but face to face, we'll get your meaning and we'll both be happy because we could talk to each other.

My English Tutor says this ALL THE TIME:

"The way to improve your language skill is to practice speaking and writing in full, complete sentences, using less "slang", and read lots of books"

But I never listen to him... hope I helped!

Reading, reading and reading. Our language skills decrease because the new generations just don't like to read anymore. TV, video games, untalented song lyrics... That's pretty much all they know and care about.
