The partiotism of today depends on absolutes.

There is a sense of loyalty to people or party over the constituion or rule of law.

Real patriotism meant questioning the government to keep it honest........even presidents themselves would be quoted as saying as much.

To me personally i love my country so much i have to speak up....when i see it going down a bad road..........this is the greatest country.....

In the past, you were allowed to question your government. Thomas Jefferson, stated that everyone should question their government, lest it become corrupt, and that if it did become corrupt, that the people of the US should rise up and overthrow it. This belief was all part and parcel of the founding fathers wishes and desires, and was held by all those who lived in the fledgling country.

Somehow that has changed into what ever your leaders do, is good and right. Even if they are corrupt and earn their monies on the backs and blood of others. The founding fathers would turn over in their graves if they knew.

Patriotism always fluxuates with events. Remember 9/11? everyone was more patriotic. Pearl harbor, vietnam (kind of), any attacks on america. it's just when we realize how lucky we are to be living in this wonderfull country that we show our respect to it. I believe it used to be a lot stronger.

While we who fly that Red, White, and Blue flag have always been arrogant, the arrogance of our past was more controlled and held more elegance. Now, we have the problem of an ignorant mass of self-righteous war-hawks, who believe we are vastly superior to every other location on the globe because of questionable military might and shaky freedoms which lay under constant attack.

Patriotism today is the result of propaganda and Christian radical belief. It was formerly a product of liberal thinking and intelligent decision making.

It differs in that today some people believe that blind faith in bad leadership is patriotism.

In the past it meant defending your country, and standing up for freedom. Today, it means calling anyone who disagrees with you an idiot.
