"Visible light" is commonly described by its color temperature. A traditional incandescent light source's color temperature is determined by comparing its hue with a theoretical, heated black-body radiator. The lamp's color temperature is the temperature in kelvins at which the heated black-body radiator matches the hue of the lamp.

Color temperature is the temperature of a black-body that has a similar color profile. In non-incandescent light sources whose light output does not resemble a black-body curve, the peak output color is sometimes used to define an equivalent color temperature.
