A lot of babies don't say a single intelligible word until after their first birthday, and almost *no* baby says her/his first wrod at 8 months old. Your neighbor is overinterpeting. When you hear your baby babbling, she hears the same thing and assumes baby is talking about her. A baby who started talking at 8 months old would have a 150 word vocabulary by the time she/he was 18 months old. When's the last time you heard of such a baby?

Every child is different. My own daughter started saying "Hi" and a form of her nickname, Bugaboo, at 10 months... her cousin, who's exactly one year older than her, didn't really start talking until around the same time she did... which put him at about 20 months.
Einstein didn't talk until he was three.... go figure.
Anyway, right now he's not even a year old, so let him just enjoy being a baby... maybe he's more focused on experiencing the world around him right now, and feels comfortable with his level of communication right now. If he's getting what he needs, then why bother with talking, right? ;)
When you take him in for his 1 year old vaccinations, schedule an appointment with his doctor and talk to him/her about it. You can work together to keep track of your son as time goes on to see if there is anything developmentally that you should be concerned about. At the very least, perhaps a visit like that will just give you peace of mind.
Good luck.

RE:
At what age should a normal baby start to talk even a single intelligible word?
My baby is 11 months old now and he hasnt start saying words clearly. He babbles and mumbles a few words but they're not yet understandable. He hasnt even called me 'mama' or anything that sounds like it.
I had asked a neighbor and she said that her baby started calling her mama as...

All babies are different, of course, and 11 months is kinda young to be overly worried. But if you're really worried, definitely bring it up at your next ped appointment. She may get you in touch with a speech and language pathologist (SLP) or an early intervention program.
Some kids are just late talkers, but an SLP can evaluate your little guy and see if there's anything else going on.
Good luck!

I wouldn't be too worried right now. Give it a few more months and see how he does. Every baby is different.
My daughter started talking at 8-9 months also ... mama, dadda and bob (her bottle). But my sister's son who is the same age didn't say his first word until about 18 months.
They're both 2 1/2 now and you can hold a conversation with my daughter. But my nephew ... you can't understand a word he says. My sister is worried but the doctor told her to give him time.

I remember my daughter was about 8 months old when she started saying dada...it's easier for them to say at first..mama soon followed. It all depends on the baby ..some develope sooner or later than others. If he doesnt speak any words by 18 months I would consult your peditrician..they'll be able to tell you more and if theres any cause for worry. Try repeating words to him..see if he picks it up.

Don't worry about it. 11 months is not too late for a baby to start talking. Most baby start to talk around their birthday. But I know a girl who doesn't talk clearly until she was 16 months old.
